Speaking of older folk nearing retirement…

Or, as they say, “re-firement!” Dave Black is back from his ministering in Ethiopia (although I suspect Dave is more ministered to than he ministers!). It is great to have Dave back posting again!

Dave pointed me towards THIS article about Billy Graham. Can you believe he is nearly 93 years old? He even has his own Facebook page and later this month will release what will most likely be his last book, entitled “Nearing Home: Life, Faith, and Finishing Well” a memoir about retirement and growing old. I thought I would share a few thoughts from the book (via the Christian Century article) given how often I hear from folks what a blessing his ministry has been to them. Some of you were even “born-again” at a BG rally!

God forbid that we should ever retire from prayer, the sweetest work of the soul”

“I often wonder if God, in his sovereignty, allows the eyesight of the aged to cast a dim view of the here and now so that we may focus our spiritual eyes on the ever after,”

“Are you willing to be used by God regardless of being bound by physical ailments, financial constraint, or the loneliness of growing old?”

“All my life I was taught how to die as a Christian, but no one ever taught me how I ought to live in the years before I die. I wish they had because I am an old man now and believe me, it’s not easy.”

Graham reserves his most poignant prose about grief for his beloved wife Ruth, who died in 2007, two years after he held his last official crusade in New York. “Not a day passes that I don’t imagine her walking through my study door or us sitting together on our porch as we did so often, holding hands as the sun set over the mountaintops. Before long Ruth and I will be reunited in heaven. More than ever, I look forward to that day!

Such a wonderful servant of God. Like I always say, I may not agree with all f BG’s theology but I sure do admire his integrity, his witness and his passion! Kind of like Professor Black really! ;)
